Chapter President Shep Hammack called the January meeting to order, followed by the invocation by David Wiley
and presentation of colors by the Chapter Color Guard. Chuck Olson led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pledge to the SAR.

Chapter Vice President Jim McDonald introduced our guest speaker Carter Wood, who gave a wonderful presentation on
'Battle of New Orleans'. In his presentation, he spoke about the Facts and Fiction of recorded "history".

The Registrar's Reports was given by Tom Chrisman, who indicated that the Mount Vernon Chapter now
has 82 full members, 10 dual members, and 5 more in process.

Two of our Color Guard members, Bill Floyd and David Wiley were given a special insignia, a "Cockade" feather to wear on their uniforms.
These signify official membership into the Georgia State Color Guard and were presented by Georgia Color Guard Commander - Bill Palmer.
From the Georgia Color Guard Handbook (Pg 3):
"Upon becoming a member of the Georgia Society SAR Color Guard, the new Color Guardsman will be
presented a "Cockade Adornment Device" consisting of a brown feather spike specific to the Georgia Society SAR Color Guard. Guardsmen
wearing the Continental uniform will also be issued a pair of white gloves."
Congratulations to both of them.

The member nominating process and election of 2018 officers was conducted at this January meeting. These officers will be instated to their positions during the
1st Annual Chapter Banquet, which will be held Tuesday February 13th at the Dunwoody Country Club.

Each year, American Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel Elijah Clarke, nicknamed "Hero of the Hornet's Nest" is remembered
with his fellow patriots in Washington, GA. NSSAR Chapters from around the Southeast, including the Mount Vernon Chapter,
participate in a Memorial Service, Parade, a Battle Field Reenactment, and a Ceremony at War Hill.
Our Chapter Recording Secretary and Color Guard member David Wiley presented the Mount Vernon Chapter wreath at Kettle Creek ceremony on Feb. 11th.
The Battle of Kettle Creek (February 14, 1779) was a major encounter in the back country of Georgia during the American
Revolutionary War. It was fought in Wilkes County about eight miles (13 km) from present-day Washington, Georgia.
A militia force of Patriots decisively defeated and scattered a Loyalist militia force that was on its way to British-controlled Augusta.

The Mount Vernon Chapter had it's 1st Annual Banquet on the evening of February 13th at the Dunwoody Country Club. The festivities started at 6 pm with adult beverages,
followed by the evening dinner and business. Outgoing President Shep Hammack and 2018 President Jim McDonald led the evening program.

The March Meeting of the Mount Vernon Chapter had 50 members, new members, wives and visitors at
our meeting. That's a terrific turnout! Thanks to all that attended.
Our Guest Speaker in March was Phil Curtis and his topic was "Metal of Honor: from Antietam to Afghanistan".

One of the topics of discussion at the recent BOM meeting was establishing "Mount Vernon Chapter Fellows". This would be
a separate fund from the Chapter dues/budget process, and would allow funding for our Chapter Education/Contest like a
Poster Contest at Grade Schools, a Brochure Contest at Middle Schools, and bolster our participation in JROTC and Eagle Scout programs.
These programs exist at the National, State & Local Chapter level.
The funding would also help with non-budgeted items like Flag holders, Awards and Certificates, etc.
This fund would be managed by a nominated and elected 3 member board (by the BOM members).
Details are being established by Shep Hammack and will be a big topic at the next BOM meeting.
We inducted three new members from the Butler family.
We congratulate & welcome them to the Mount Vernon Chapter!

Compatriot Randy Pollard joined other Georgia Color Guard members on May 5th for the grave marking of Patriot Maj. John Callaway.
From Randy...
"This patriot lived on the Callaway Farms plantation in Wilkes Co. I presented a wreath from our Mt Vernon chapter.
Maj. Callaway is the SAR ancestor for Cason and Bo Callaway who created and ran Callaway Gardens in middle Georgia.
The private cemetery was created in 1783 and is very scenic. The wood framed Callaway home shown was built in the 1790's
near the cemetery site."
"A Bar B Que lunch was served for the Georgia Color Guard and Callaway family guests (80-90) at the giant Granade Farms barn .
The brick home of Job Callaway, built in 1868, is now a museum in Wilkes Co. near the city of Washington, Georgia."

Guest Speaker in May: Virginia Dilkes,
Virginia serves as a volunteer for the U.S. WWI Centennial Commemoration Commission and is a member of the Advisory Board to the Georgia WWI Centennial Commemoration Commission.
Her Topic: Georgia's World War I Legacies
A look at memorials and monuments in Georgia.
Virginia has traveled throughout the State of Georgia talking to veteran services organizations and local newspapers about their plans to commemorate WWI.
She has attended Memorial Day and Veterans Day services across the state.

The city of Roswell held its annual "Roswell Remembers" Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday May 28th and is the largest Memorial day service in Georgia.
The annual event usually attracts approximately 6,000-7,000 people and has several state or national dignitaries.
The city's program began at 11 a.m. on the grounds of Roswell City Hall and included the presentation of colors, singing the National Anthem,
Pledge of Allegiance, invocation, "Lest We Forget" POW/MIA remembrance, laying of the wreath and remarks from this year's keynote speaker,
George Lingerfelt, a retired U.S. Army sergeant.

Carter is a Lyman Hall Chapter member and the 2017-2018 Chapter President.
He is also a Georgia SAR Society Northeast Regional VP and currently the editor of the Georgia 'Hornets Nest' Publication.

Update:
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of our newest member, Kenneth Clarence Reed. Kenneth was inducted into the Mount Vernon Chapter SAR on
June 12th and proud of his patriot forefathers dating back to 1635. Kenneth lost his 7 year battle with Mesothelioma cancer on Sunday June 17th. Please keep the
family of Kenneth Reed in your thoughts and prayers. Here is a link to this remarkable man’s obit:

- There will not be a regular chapter meeting held on the second Tuesday of July (7/10).
Instead, Mount Vernon Annual picnic is scheduled for Saturday July 28th at 6 pm.
- There will not be a meeting in August. Enjoy your summer.
- The next regular chapter meeting is Tuesday September 11th at Vintage Pizzeria.

The weather was perfect for the Annual Dunwoody 4th of July Parade this year.
The Mount Vernon Color Guard was at the front of the parade - 2nd position assisting behind the Dunwoody JROTC group.
Color Guard members included Tom Chrisman, Shep Hammack, Bill Floyd, Rusty Redding and CG Commander Randy Pollard.

Our annual picnic was attended by 38 members, wives and guest.
We welcomed five new members into the Mount Vernon Chapter and the SAR.
New members Graham Lewis, Jackson Lewis, Ryan Lewis, Xavier Kiefer, and Davis Rosser brought our total membership to over 100 members in the Mount Vernon Chapter!
President Jim McDonald presided over the ceremony and welcomed the new members into the SAR, thanks to the efforts of Chapter Registrar/Genealogist Tom Chrisman.
Tom was also awarded the Liberty Medal, a prestigious award in the SAR, for bringing so many people into the Chapter and the SAR.

The September meeting of the Mount Vernon Chapter had 31 members, wives and visitors at
our meeting. Thanks to all that attended.

Our Guest Speaker was Mary Williams and her topic was "Revolutionary War Trivia".
As it turns out, Henry Wadsworth's poem about Paul Revere is not quite true on facts.
The lantern in the North Church was not for Paul Revere, and Revere did not make it to Concord!
He was captured by the British before he got there.
Mary is the Current Regent of the Martha Stewart Bulloch Chapter - DAR, and a distinguished speaker/member of Toastmasters.
Bill Floyd presented Mary with a Speaker Appreciation Certificate.

Bill Floyd introduced Past MSBDAR Regent Catherine Jimenez, who is the current Regent of the local C.A.R.
(Children of the American Revolution).
Catherine spoke about a program support homeless veterans and asked for financial support.
Chapter Business
- Treasurer's Report: Ted Fricke reported the balance in the chapter account.
- Registrar's Report: Tom Chrisman gave us the updated member count, future prospects, and applications in process.
- The Mount Vernon Chapter Board of Managers (BOM) has created a Mount Vernon Fellows Fund that members can financially support thru contributions at any time, or annually with their dues. This fund is primarily a vehicle for funding non-budgeted needs established by a yet to be appointed Fund Board of Managers. This board will consist of 3 Chapter members not officers on the Chapter BOM. Examples are funding: The Traveling Trunk, The Scouting Program & Awards, The JROTC Program and Awards, future School Poster and Brochure Contest. This is part of the SAR mission.
- Formation of the Nominations Committee (3 Members)
- The 2019 annual dues form is now available and has been mailed out to Chapter members. Dues payments must be received by December 15th to continue being a member in the Chapter.
- Shep Hammack presented fund raising idea of offering Golf/Polo Shirts to members. The shirts will have an SAR and Mount Vernon Chapter logo on them. The members will soon have a way to vote on the color of the shirt. (White, Gold, Navy Blue, Sky Blue, etc.)

- Next Chapter meeting will be on Tuesday, October 9th at Vintage Pizza.
- The October speaker will be Donna C. Rowe, who will be speaking on The Vietnam War. You won't want to miss this.
- Color Guard Event: September 15th - Patriots on the Square - Cartersville, GA 11am - 2pm.
- Color Guard Event: September 17th - Constitution Day - St. Paul's Church, Augusta, GA.
- 2022 Congress will be in Savannah, Georgia. Plan/Make your reservations accordingly. We would like to have a large turnout from the Mt. Vernon Chapter.

The October meeting of the Mount Vernon Chapter had 24 members, wives and visitors at
our meeting.

Vice President Bill Floyd, introduced Donna C. Rowe to the membership, who spoke of her experiences during the Viet Nam War
and the bravery of those with whom she served. She also told a remarkable story of a critically injured infant and the efforts
made in successfully saving her life. That child, along with Mrs. Rowe will be in attendance at a Viet Nam war film shown at 6:00 PM
on November 6th at the theatre on Marietta Square.
Following the presentation, VP Bill Floyd presented Donna Rowe with a Speaker Appreciation Certificate.
Did you know? - 58,267 men & women's names are engraved on black granite wall at the Memorial in Washington DC.
Eight of those names are army nurses.

The Mount Vernon Chapter gave a Traveling Trunk Presentation to the children at Lake Forest Elementary School in Sandy Springs.
140 students participated in an outdoor amphitheater on the playground of the school on a cloudy and cool Thursday morning.
It was well received by the students, who enjoyed learning about Revolutionary War era life.
Each fourth grade class (students) and their teachers participated in the Traveling Trunk program, except Davida Dyer, who's son was graduating from basic training at Fort Jackson Georgia.
A special thanks to educators Davida Dyer and Ms. Brown for working with Chapter members Jim McDonald, Shep Hammack and Bill Floyd to arrange this fun and educational event.

The Georgia Color Guard presented colors at the Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday 11/11
at the Atlanta History Center. That observance day was established to commemorate the end of WWI, which ended on the
"11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month".
"On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, the guns fell silent. It brought an end to four years of war which crippled Europe,
leaving 17 million dead including 888,246 British or Colonial servicemen. As we approach the centenary of the Armistice on November 11,
the Imperial War Museum has released a recording of the moment the war ended, patched together using archive material from their collections.
The artillery activity it illustrates was recorded on the American front near the River Moselle, one minute before and one minute after the war ended.
Strangely, audio couldn't be recorded at the time so the Allies created them using 'sound ranging', which recorded the intensity of noise to
photographic film (a seismograph for earthquakes is a good comparison). This visual record allowed the Imperial War Museum to turn the moment
back into audio to give an impression of what the moment was like."

The annual Veterans Day program at Veterans Park featured a keynote speech by author/writer Joe Galloway, one of America's premiere
war correspondents and co-author of the international bestseller We Were Soldiers Once... And Young, which was adapted
into the acclaimed movie We Were Soldiers starring Mel Gibson & Madeleine Stowe, Sam Elliot, Barry Pepper (as Joe Galloway)
and a host other actors.

Traveling Trunk at Holy Innocents Episcopal School

The Mount Vernon Chapter gave it's second Traveling Trunk Presentation this month to the children at Holy Innocents Episcopal School
in Sandy Springs on December 4th. Bill Floyd and David Wiley gave the presentation to 90 students from 4 classes of 4th graders and
6 teachers. It was well received by the students, who enjoyed learning about Revolutionary War era life.

Chapter President Jim McDonald called the December meeting to order at 7 pm,
followed by the invocation by Chaplain David Wellons. Sergeant-at-Arms Chuck Olson led the group in the
Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the SAR. There were 32 people attended the meeting to see our special guest.
The Mount Vernon Chapter Color Guard, made up of members Shep Hammack, John Wassell, Randy Pollard
and Tom Chrisman presented of colors. Members gave the Pledge of Allegiance and Pledge to the SAR to start the meeting.
Guest Speaker Terry Manning
Jim McDonald introduced guest speaker Manning, who did a marvelous job going through recorded history in colonial and
post Revolutionary War era America of the character associated with the Christmas Spirit. Was it St. Nicholas, Father Christmas, or Santa Claus?

Presentation Highlights
- In 1773, probably referring to a well known 17th century Delaware Indian and referring to him as “St. a Claus.”
- In 1776, St. Nicholas was a traditional gift bearer among the Dutch who were prominent in settling New York. Regarded as a well dressed, affluent religious figure.
- Around 1812, the lower classes did not always have reason to celebrate Christmas and he changed from a religious figure to a gift giving, benevolent character purposely associated with the celebration of Christmas, someone who gave to those less fortunate.
- In 1821, William Gilley wrote the poem, "A Children’s Friend," which is the first mention of a (1) reindeer.
- In 1823, Clement C. Moore composed the poem, "Twas the Night before Christmas" with an 8 reindeer team.

The Annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony is held in 3 locations in the Atlanta area at 12 noon each year.
At the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, at Marietta National Cemetery near the downtown square, and at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Roswell Georgia on Mimosa Blvd.
The annual event reminds us to Remember and Honor our veterans through the laying of Remembrance wreaths on their graves at a National or historic Cemetery.

Wreaths Across America has thousands of volunteers, and many of them are young people. The events at Marietta and at Canton has Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts,
JROTC units, Cadet ROTC members and volunteers that showed up to lay wreaths at every headstone. After straightening the wreath to the stone,
and allowing the name of the person to be seen, the volunteer would back up one step and salute the fallen veteran.

On Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 12:00 PM, Cobb County Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol GA-090 will be helping Marietta National Cemetery
to Remember and Honor our veterans by laying Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes.

Canton:
Chuck Rann attended the Canton ceremony.
The 12 noon ceremony was held at the Assembly Area, which is shown on the map below.
The Civil Air Patrol flew over the Canton Cemetery as well.
